Titus: An Introduction
How do you introduce yourself? I probably have a dozen ways to answer that question. Renae Adelsberger, Commercial Account Manager at Allison Insurance. Renae, wife of Kevin, daughter of Randy and Cindy, sister of Adam, lover of llamas, teacher of Sunday School, member of FBC Jackson, fan of the Minnesota Vikings, friend of Rachel, resident of Tennessee. The list continues.
If you could only pick one way to introduce yourself for the rest of your life – what would it be?
In the first words of Titus, the Apostle Paul introduces himself this way, “Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ.”
Why the double introduction? Why a reference to both God and Jesus? Why a slave an also an apostle?
By choosing the Greek word doulos (translated here as “slave”), Paul shows his dedication to serving God. Serving as a slave can be a low-position, and by placing himself in this role, Paul shows the grandeur of his respect for God.
In a broad sense, each Christian is called to be a servant of God. But our duties differ. Some may teach, others encourage, and yet others show mercy. Here, Paul states that his job is to be an apostle of Jesus Christ. As an apostle, his call was to act as a special messenger who dedicated his entire life to spreading the truth of Jesus.
Before we dive into the rest of Titus, start with this question for yourself – if you were to create a business card for yourself in the Kingdom of God, what would your God-given title be? Are you actively living out that call in your life?
