Nice vs. Good

nicevsgood-01

I had the house to myself for a night last month and I was super excited about two things – getting to eat my bow tie noodles with alfredo sauce (Kevin prefers red sauce) and watching Into the Woods (this is about as close to a “chick flick” as I like to get).

I hunkered on the couch with my bowl of noodles and pressed play, quite honestly, not knowing what to expect. I had read the play in high school, remembered liking it enough to keep my copy on my bookshelf, but couldn’t remember the plot or the themes.

This is not a movie review, but I will say this much, the first 30 minutes in particular are movie-musical magic. The lyrics were beautifully executed and edited to fit film.

There were oh so many themes I could blog about today, but I’ll stick with just two quotes from the movie that make similar points.

The first: Little Red Riding Hood is skipping along the path through the woods, all the time singing about how her mother told her to stay on the path and not to stray. But then she encounters the wolf (played by Johnny Depp). The wolf shows her an entire world of wonders, including berries, that exist if she strays from the path. He is ever so kind and convinces her to wander. Later, as Red reflects on her decisions, she describes the wolf by saying, “Nice isn’t the same as good.”

Snow & Sin

A quick scroll through social media or eaves dropping in the checkout lane last week made me realize that most of my Jackson community either lives for snow days or lives to despise them. One of the worst realizations I had coming out of college and joining the workforce is that I no longer get a snow day. Sure enough, that snowy Thursday  morning I tugged on the closest thing I have to snow boots, added an extra coat for good measure, and joined the other three cars on the road that were unfortunate enough drive down Vann Drive.

God-Breathed in Context

In our Sunday School class for middle school girls, we have been studying how to study the Bible. The Lord has blessed us with two fruitful weeks of study as the girls have learned basic facts about the Bible’s history as well as its physical layout. We’ve practiced using not only our table of contents but also our concordance.

We put our newly learned Bible studying lessons into practice with 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and the Lord taught me a couple awesome facts about the text that I had not previously noticed.

Looking just at 2 Timothy 3:16-17 we asked,

What is the purpose of Scripture?

Verse 16 teaches us that it is “profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, [and] for training in righteousness.” God’s Word has the power to encourage us but we may not feel encouraged through absolutely every passage and reading. Some days, God’s Word will convict us of our sin and call us into action.

Book Review: 90 Days with a Heart like His

As 2014 came to a close, I needed a Bible study to get me in the word personally. Ever since I attended a Christian-based university, I have believed that a person’s quiet time should not be the same passage that they are reading for homework, studying for a paper, or researching for a sermon. I do well with personal goals so I decided to start this study because it had a reading plan, thought, and prayer for every day. I love that.

There is a video that goes along with the study that I did not watch, so I cannot speak for the video portion.

On a physical, non-spiritual note, this book is HUGE! It’s 437 pages long and a beast to haul around with you. So this book took a permanent home in my car and I read and reflected on Scripture every day on my lunch break. I don’t know about you, but by 12:30, I need more Scripture in my life to make it through the afternoon with a Christ-like attitude.
